NewsletterConnecticut has a new Child Passenger Safety Law! Effective October 1, 2005, children in Connecticut are required to ride in a booster seat until they are over 6 years of age AND over 60 pounds. Children must meet both age and weight requirements. After children outgrow their car seat, they must ride in a booster seat using a lap and shoulder belt. (The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recommends children ride in a booster seat until they are at least 8 years old or until 4 feet 9 inches tall.) The new law also requires that infants remain rear-facing until they are 1 year of age AND 20 pounds! Once an infant outgrows their infant seat, they need to remain rear- facing and ride in a rear-facing convertible car seat. To make an appointment for a free car seat check, please call New London County Safe Kids at (860) 442-0733. Violators will be fined and required to attend a car seat education class.
